Since 2013 buildingcommunityWORKSHOP has facilitated the design and construction of 22 unique Little Free Libraries/Libros Libres. Inspired by Little Free Libraries, the Dallas based Libros Libres program has brought together local artists, designers, and community leaders to design and build a range of public outdoor book exchanges in the West Dallas, South Dallas/Fair Park, and south Oak Cliff areas of Dallas.
All libraries operate under the guiding principle of "take a book, leave a book," are publicly accessible, and free. The design and function of the libraries are site-specific and developed through a collaboration with designers, users, and community leaders. An emphasis on participatory design and programming at each step of the process makes this program unique.
In summer 2015, Libros Libres completed its second round of libraries with the generous support of the Real Estate Council foundation and is now in the planning stages for the next series.
